Flack: (saving) on expenses - Kentish Canteen, NW5

Reviewer Louise Thomas, director, Break Communications

- What is it good for?

The produce is top class and very reasonably priced. The place itself is always buzzing with activity, no matter when you visit. It is very versatile too, working equally well for lunch and dinner. There is a terrace for use during the summer, as well as a private basement room available for hire.

- Signature dishes

The seafood linguine with crab meat and chilli is amazing, and the Serrano ham with tomato toast is always a winner. Dessert-wise, it is a toss up between the creme brulee and passion fruit cheesecake. The house white wine is one of the best I have tasted.

- Who's the boss?

Owen Crinnigan and Wendy Sinclair, who also have PJ's Bar & Grill in Covent Garden. The head chef is John Cook, who was previously at Vinoteca.

- Tips please

Go off-piste and give the larder a try.

- What's the damage?

It costs about £17 for two courses and £25 for three courses.
