PRWeek revealed that Ovo Energy was seeking agency support in June to help it challenge the industry’s ‘big six’ energy providers.
Ovo, which claims to be the country’s cheapest gas and electricity provider, is planning an aggressive comms and lobbying campaign to capitalise on the expected backlash from price hikes by the six main energy companies.
Bell Pottinger will work on an initial campaign to introduce the brand to consumers, followed by an ongoing retained account.
The agency will report to Roy Payne, Ovo’s newly installed head of comms who joined in May having previously headed comms for Cable & Wireless and the British Film Institute.
Bell Pottinger will work on media relations, lobbying, alliance-building with consumer organisations and social media.
The account is said to be worth up to £250,000 a year in fees. It is thought that both Edelman and Hill & Knowlton were on the final shortlist for the brief.
The six major energy firms are British Gas, E.On Energy, EDF Energy, Npower, Scottish and Southern Energy and Scottish Power.
