Flack: (saving) on expenses - The Modern Pantry, London EC1

Reviewer: Mairi Drysdale-Morgan, senior programme director, Hotwire

- What is it good for?

Bright, light, contemporary and gently buzzing with a mixture of Clerkenwell creatives and City types venturing further afield. No pomp, just a focus on delicious and original dishes, using unusual and exciting ingredients with a global influence.

- Signature dish

My favourites include the chorizo scotched quail egg and the unusual spiced prawn omelette. I defy anyone not to be tempted by dessert here, including cinder toffee ice cream and maple syrup panna cotta.

- Who's the boss?

Head chef is Anna Hansen, previously one of the founders of Marylebone staple, The Providores.

- Tips please

Upstairs is best for lunch and dinner while the downstairs cafe works for a business breakfast or informal bite. The service is always good and knowledgeable.

- What's the damage?

There is a two-course lunch available for £19, including a good range of signature dishes. Otherwise, mains range from £14-£20.

The Modern Pantry, 47-48 St John's Square, Clerkenwell, London EC1V 4JJ. 020 7553 9210.
