Public Sector: Northumbria University replaces comms chief

Northumbria University has poached Leeds City Council's head of comms.

Andy Carter joins the university on 18 July, taking over from director of corporate comms and development Jonathan Ray. Ray left the university in January to take a role as director of comms at affordable housing company Home Group.

Carter is a former broadcast journalist, having worked for the BBC and Sky News, and also worked as head of news at The Local Radio Company. He has worked at Leeds for four-and-a-half years, originally joining as comms manager for press and media relations in 2007.

Carter said: 'I'm excited by the challenges facing the higher education sector - it has its own unique challenges. The university has a fantastic reputation. I think they want me to look at the organisation's profile in the media and they are also keen on looking at how external comms works.'

He will oversee a comms team of 18 and report to the vice-chancellor, Andrew Wathey.

Carter's duties will include responsibility for press and media relations, internal comms, the university's web content and the publications team.

He will also be responsible for alumni relations and will oversee the university's two art galleries.
