Public Sector: Council hosts 'Twitterthon'

Tameside Borough Council launched a 24-hour Twitterthon last Thursday to broadcast details of the work it does during a typical day.

One tweet referred to 'blowing up balloons for Carers Week', while another read: 'Sean has just finished cutting and edging Droylsden bowling green.'

The move emulated a hugely successful exercise by Greater Manchester Police in 2010.

John Taylor, deputy leader of Tameside Borough Council, said: 'It's important that people understand the services the council provides.'

London Communications Agency director Luke Blair said in this week's public sector column: 'It is hard to fault the Twitterthon ...

Other councils, particularly in London, should follow Tameside's example.'
