Protesters: UK Feminista and OBJECT
Location: The Playboy Club, Mayfair
Date: 4 June
Feminist campaigners staged protests at the opening of the new Playboy Club in London 's Mayfair, chanting 'Eff Off, Hef!' at Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, who flew in from Los Angeles for the launch.
Why the protests?
UK Feminista director Kat Banyard said: 'It was Hugh Hefner who laid the political and cultural groundwork for the brutal, violently misogynistic pornography that now floods society.' OBJECT campaigns manager Anna van Heeswijk added: 'Far from a symbol of sophistication and class, the opening of a new Playboy club in London signifies a worrying step backwards in the quest for equality between the sexes.'
How did Playboy respond?
While Playboy has not commented on the protests, Hefner said at the opening: 'When we first opened the Playboy Club in London it was one of my favourite times for the brand. With Playboy now more popular than ever, I look forward to sharing the notions celebrated in the magazine: good food and drink, pretty girls and exciting entertainment.'
Operations director Adam Roberts told the London Evening Standard: 'Playboy was pioneering when it first opened its clubs and we're pioneering here too.'
How did the media cover it?
The protests were covered broadly by the press including The Guardian, Metro and the Evening Standard.
