The Independent is to bolster its business coverage. The daily has not yet set a timetable for the changes to its highly-regarded section.
At present, The Independent has either three or four business pages. 'We are planning to expand,' a spokeswoman said. However, she refused to confirm whether the expansion would entail the hiring of extra staff, an increase in pages, coverage of different sectors or a mixture of the three. Business and City editor Jeremy Warner was not available to comment.
It is not known whether the departure of financial editor Andrew Garfield, who is moving into PR with Brunswick (PRWeek, 5 January), was the catalyst for change.
He is currently part of a 12-strong team who report to Warner and to business editor Michael Harrison.
The team also includes City editor Nigel Cope, personal finance editor John Willcock and economics editor Diane Coyle, with regular contributions from David Usborne in New York.
