Public Affairs: The Week in Lobbying

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has updated MPs on his plans to introduce a statutory lobbying register.

Addressing the House of Commons on 24 May, he said: 'We hope that the consultation will proceed during the summer to meet the objective in the coalition Government of creating a register of lobbyists.' Clegg was responding to Conservative MP Jesse Norman, who asserted that 'the influence of lobbying can cause serious defamation to the democratic process'.

Labour leader Ed Miliband has appointed the former EDS lobbyist Michael Dugher as his parliamentary private secretary. Dugher was elected MP for Barnsley East in 2010 after serving as a special adviser to Prime Minsiter Gordon Brown in Number 10. He replaces Chuka Umunna MP, who becomes shadow minister for business and industry.

The Countryside Alliance has hired Dylan Sharpe, previously head of press for the No to AV campaign, as head of media relations. He replaces Tim Bonner, who is now public affairs officer for the Hunting Office.

Cicero Consulting has recruited Tom Frackowiack, public affairs manager at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, as account director.
