Hay Festival Hay-on-Wye.

The annual literary and arts festival opens. Highlights this year include Vanessa Redgrave, Ralph Fiennes and Gillian Anderson discussing US military interrogation techniques, music from Cerys Matthews and comedy from Dara O'Briain and Jo Brand. The festival runs until 5 June.

FIFA presidential election Zurich, Switzerland.

The 61st congress of the international footballing body today has on the agenda the election of the FIFA president. Incumbent Sepp Blatter faces a challenge from Asian Football Confederation president Mohamed Bin Hammam of Qatar, the Gulf state controversially awarded the 2022 World Cup.

AEGON tennis championships Queen's Club, London.

The traditional grass court warm-up for Wimbledon kicks off at London's Queen's Club and runs until 12 June.

Isle of Wight Festival Seaclose Park, Isle of Wight.

The three-day musical festival is headlined by Kings of Leon, Foo Fighters and Kasabian.
