Patrick Loughran was Lord Mandelson’s top media adviser during his most recent spell in government as business secretary.

Before working for the ‘Prince of Darkness’, Loughran was a senior adviser to Gordon Brown in Number 10, with responsibility for drafting the then prime minister’s answers to parliamentary questions.

An influential figure in Labour circles, he has also served as the party’s director of research and was a key figure in Labour’s once fabled attack unit, which provided the media with a stream of anti-Conservative stories.

Loughran has spent the last few months advising the campaign for a Yes vote in Thursday’s Alternative Vote referendum. But with the campaign having almost run its course, he is set to join Blue Rubicon later this month as an associate director.

In the new role he will link up with Spencer Livermore, a former colleague from the attack unit, who also went on to work in Brown’s Number 10. Livermore joined Blue Rubicon in January 2009 as head of strategy and planning.

Blue Rubicon was set up in 1999 by Fraser Hardie and Chris Jones. Recent clients include Barclays, British Gas, Coca-Cola and Shell.
