Aiken calls for shake-up

A senior public sector comms director has described public service comms as being 'in the doldrums', one year on from the election.

In a column exclusively written for, Westminster City Council director of comms Alex Aiken argues that budget cuts, ministerial scepticism and local retrenchment have 'hollowed out' government comms.

'The permanent secretary for comms has gone, the COI is facing abolition, councils are being told how many publications to issue and government departments are seeing their director roles being downgraded,' writes Aiken.

Aiken lists four areas on which public sector communicators are going to have to focus to re-establish their roles.
