Smiths Group - the FTSE 100 engineering company formed last year from the merger of Smiths Industries and TI Group - is set to review its external financial PR roster and corporate communications function.

Smiths Group director of corporate communications Russell Plumley has confirmed it will carry out an overhaul of its PR to ensure duplication and overheads are minimised.

Although no specific details have been revealed, Plumley said both internal and external financial PR will be reviewed.

'It's very early days and there are various decisions still to be taken regarding the retaining of external consultancies,' he said.

'It's part of our plan to operate a slimmed down headquarters and we expect the external agencies roster to reflect that.'

The former TI Group retained City PR firm Finsbury, while Smiths Industries used Brunswick on a project basis.

The group's combined 12-strong senior corporate communications team will be restructured to fit the new entity.

It has not yet been announced which role former TI Group director of corporate communications Richard Poston will now fill.

Smiths Group, which consists of various businesses from aerospace to hi-tech medical instruments, has been valued at pounds 4.8bn.
