World Online hands UK consumer PR to Firefly

World Online has dropped Edelman PR Worldwide after a review of its UK agency roster.

The European ISP has handed an annual pounds 200,000 fee consumer brief to Firefly Communications after a full pitch for the consumer media remit. The consultancy is understood to have beaten Fodor Wyllie at the final two-agency shootout.

Bite Communications, Hill & Knowlton and Burson-Marsteller are all understood to have presented their credentials earlier in proceedings.

World Online began to review external resources late last year after the appointment of Nicola Hird as its first head of communications for the UK (PRWeek, 27 October 2000).

Hird ran the pitch for the annual retainer account together with UK CEO Simon Preston, and Firefly's account team - led by account director Sharon Gertler and overseen by board director Kieran Moore - will report to Hird.

World Online's b-to-b account with Harvard PR is not affected. Neither is the work that Brunswick does for World Online International, the UK arm's parent company in The Netherlands.

'They have tasked us with driving traffic to their site and raising the profile of their services for home users made possible through broadband technology,' Moore said.

It is understood that Edelman did not repitch for the business, despite having only worked on the account since September 1999.
