Tesco hires MoS journalist to direct comms.

Tesco corporate affairs director Lucy Neville-Rolfe has appointed a Mail on Sunday journalist to fill the newly-created UK communications director post.

Chris Leake, who has served 18 years as the MoS industrial and consumer affairs editor, handed in his notice this week and is set to join the supermarket giant in the new year.

The latest round of Neville-Rolfe's shake-up - which has seen a number of senior PROs leave in recent months - leaves a question mark over the future of media relations head David Sawday, who was widely tipped for the post (PRWeek, 3 November). Sawday was unavailable for comment at the time of going to press.

Neville-Rolfe, who confirmed Sawday had applied for the position, said: 'Chris brings excellent skills. He has been a journalist for many years and has national newsroom experience.

'We believe this is a good move for him. He is an excellent consumer affairs specialist. There was competition and David was an internal applicant,' she added.

Neville-Rolfe said Sawday - who will now report to Leake - had been given 'extra responsibilities over product and corporate PR' within his head of media relations remit: 'David is a skillful and valuable member of the team.'

Leake will head a team of 15 and report to Neville-Rolfe.

'I am excited by the prospect of joining Tesco and sad at leaving the MoS,' said Leake
