Flack: (saving) on expenses - Union Cafe, London W1

Reviewer Miles Rose, account director, TVC Group

- What is it good for?

It is in a fantastic location, close to Oxford Street and Bond Street tube stations. The dining room has a busy vibe, staff are attentive and friendly, and the interior is modern, with an open-plan kitchen allowing you to watch your meal being prepared.

- Signature dishes

A contemporary menu caters for lunch through to dinner. Highlights include the Union Burger with chips, rocket, tomatoes and blue cheese, crab cakes and Cumberland sausages with mash and red onion gravy.

- Who's the boss?

It is owned by Brinkley's restaurants, which also owns Brinkley's and Joe's Brasserie.

- Tips please?

The mezze plate is perfect for sharing as a starter, and for those with an appetite it's a tough choice between the fillet steak and the burger. For lighter meals, the roast sea bass or grilled goat's cheese salad are delightful.

- What's the damage?

Lunch for two with coffee and wine tops up at around £50.
