INTERNATIONAL: Kim joins Compaq to drive Asia-Pacific PR

SINGAPORE: Computer giant Compaq has appointed Susan Kim as its first PR manager for the south-east Asian region.

SINGAPORE: Computer giant Compaq has appointed Susan Kim as its

first PR manager for the south-east Asian region.

In her new role, Kim will co-ordinate Compaq’s PR across six countries -

Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines -

and is tasked with repositioning Compaq as a global leader in internet

computing. She has been marketing director for the American Chamber of

Commerce in Korea since 1996.

Compaq is confident that the IT industry will experience high growth in

the region as it recovers from a recession. ’We are seeing south-east

Asian countries rapidly moving to a digital economy,’ Kim told PR

Week.

Compaq created the PR manager post as a result of its recent restructure

into four business units and the end of a 17-year PR relationship with

Shandwick last year. The four groups are: enterprise solutions and

services; commercial personal computing; consumer, and customer

services. Kim will oversee PR for all four units in her region,

reporting to Compaq Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN)

marketing and communications manager Boon Yew Choy.

The role previously fell under the remit of Asia-Pacific PR head Tong

Chuit Chee, whose responsibilities have been reduced to cover the rest

of the Asia-Pacific area bar China, which is handled by national PR

manager Grace Ma.

Kim will also work with Text 100 in Singapore, which has been retained

for the ASEAN region while the pitch for the global account continues in

the US.

Compaq is the global leader in PC sales, although figures place it

second to Dell in the US market last year.
