Abbey National, the top five UK bank, has appointed Thomas Coops to
the position of corporate affairs director.
Coops stepped into the role this week after four years as the bank’s
head of investor relations. He has worked at Abbey for 11 years,
including a spell as a branch manager in north London. He trained as a
solicitor in the City, before joining Abbey and becoming part of the
project management team that handled the bank’s demutualisation in
Coops reports to group finance director Mark Pain and replaces Nick
Challoner, who left the firm four weeks ago.
In his new role Coops oversees 50 staff, covering investor relations,
public affairs, events management, internal communications and a
16-strong press office.
The bank uses agencies on a project basis - including Financial Dynamics
and Ludgate - although Coops intends to carry out a thorough review of
the company’s PR function.
With 17 million customers in the UK, Abbey has successfully managed the
transition to bank status. Coops said his aim now is ’to distinguish us
