Diary: Noble switchboard is flying high thanks to a new holding pattern

A wacky gimmick from consumer agency Peter Noble PR is proving

music to the ears of its clients and journalists.

Based on the fact that everybody hates ’on-hold’ muzak, the agency has

decided to offer callers a welcome alternative.

Agency director and former music journalist Peter Noble has taken it

upon himself to provide a changeable feast of tunes from his personal

2,000-strong CD collection - with everything from Dionne Warwick to the

wailing melodies of Joaquin Cortes’ Spanish singers.

He even takes great pleasure in choosing a different tune each day,

themed to current clients. At the moment, it’s Don McLean’s American

Pie, in advance of his UK concerts, and rock’n’roll legends Chuck Berry,

Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis.

The agency, which is also handling PR for toys from the new movie

Chicken Run, has found its phone music is becoming such a hit, callers

are actually asking to be put on hold.

’There’s nothing like bad on-hold music to put people off, so we thought

if callers were going to be left waiting the least we could do was to

make it enjoyable,’ says DJ Noble, who tells the Diary he may soon be

open to requests.
