The agency was awarded a retained brief by the FTSE 250 firm after a competitive pitch. Tulchan Communications was the incumbent on the account.
The move follows the January appointment of Austen Lees as Shanks’ first in-house head of corporate comms. The firm, which has operations in the UK, Netherlands, Belgium and Canada, initiated a full-scale review of group comms strategy under independent PR adviser Tony McGarahan following the collapse of a takeover bid from the Carlyle Group in March 2010.
As a result, Shanks has called for broader comms support, focusing on highlighting the firm’s leading position in sustainable waste management in Europe and new technologies.
Lees commented: ‘Shanks’ services are at the forefront of growth in the rapidly developing waste management sector and we want to step up our comms programme.’
College Hill partners Mike Davies and Gareth David will head financial PR, complemented by disciplines from across the agency, including senior consultant Carolyn Dealey and consultant Zoë March for corporate brand building.
