Australian airline Qantas has appointed travel and tourism
specialist, Brighter PR to handle its UK PR.
Brighter was hired after a five-way pitch, which included Cohn and Wolfe
and incumbent of four years Communications in Business (CIB).
’Qantas appointed a new general manager. It was a case of new people,
new scene,’ CIB managing director Toby Oliver told PR Week.
The account will be headed by Brighter PR managing director Debbie Flynn
and will promote Australia’s biggest international airline predominantly
in the travel press.
Qantas has a London-based marketing team but no in-house PR team.
Brighter will run the UK Qantas press office as well as provide
consultation on crisis management and promotions. No one at Qantas was
available for comment as PR Week went to press.
Brighter reports to Sally Martin, Qantas general manager for UK, Ireland
and the Middle East.
Qantas, which has an exemplary safety record, has recently been dogged
by safety scares including a ’serious incident’ over Easter when one of
two engines had to be cut on a flight between Cairns and Sydney, and
last year the airline suffered a pounds 60 million repair bill when one
of its jets overshot a runway at Bangkok airport.
