BAE seeks to repitch consumer PR brief

BAE Systems is repitching its £200,000 consumer account, currently held by Euro RSCG, as it looks to emphasise its expertise in innovation.

The new agency will handle media relations, consultancy and research. It will also be involved in international PR requirements.

BAE head of external comms Kate Watcham said: 'It's the account where we focus on consumer PR activity. We are looking for an agency that can support us with communicating our engineering and technology and innovation expertise.' The brief is expected to be reviewed in one year.

Last month, Euro RSCG announced that BAE Systems had successfully demonstrated a prototype laser device to serve as a non-lethal deterrent against pirate attacks on oil tankers and container ships.

BAE's corporate reputation took a hit last year after it admitted to false accounting and making misleading statements in relation to investigations by the US authorities and the Serious Fraud Office. The company agreed to pay a fine of $400 million to the the US Department of Justice and a further £30m under an agreement with the Serious Fraud Office.

A spokeswoman for BAE stressed that the repitch was not linked to the investigations or the subsequent payments.
