Capital Radio has wooed Virgin Radio’s head of press and PR, Elly
Smith, to become its first head of corporate communications.
Capital had been on the hunt for someone to fill this new senior
management post before it announced its proposed acquisition of Virgin
Radio in May - although the role could also involve overseeing
communications for Virgin if the deal gets regulatory approval.
Smith, who takes up her post immediately, will report to chief executive
Richard Eyre on corporate and group issues, and to station director
Martina King on station matters.
She will manage communications with the City, consumer and trade
Her responsibilities will cover the company’s two London radio stations,
Capital 95.8 FM and Capital Gold in London, as well as Web sites,
restaurant chain My Kinda Town (which Capital bought last year) and the
Personal publicity for breakfast DJ Chris Tarrant is still handled by
Smith said she would be reviewing Capital’s internal and external PR
arrangements and may consider expanding her in-house team. PR agencies
currently used by Capital include Finsbury for financial PR and Grayling
for the Internet sites.
Smith said of her move to Virgin Radio’s former arch rival: ’If the deal
goes through there will still be healthy rivalry between the stations -
but we probably won’t go as far as we did in the past.’
