Public Affairs: The week in Lobbying

Connect Communications has recruited Steve Barwick as an associate director.

A former Connect staffer, he rejoins the agency from his role as director of strategy for 4NW, the North West Leaders' Board. Although Barwick will be based in London, the agency said his recruitment reflected its ambitions to expand its client base in the North.

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers has appointed Guide Public Affairs to boost its political and public profile. Guide was set up in 2010 by Greig Baker, former head of operations at polling consultancy ComRes.

The Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers has promoted head of comms Kate Nicholls to the new role of strategic affairs director and deputy CEO. Nicholls will retain responsibility for public affairs at the trade body representing pub and bar operators. The ALMR also retains Bell Pottinger Public Affairs.

EEF, the Westminster-headquartered manufacturers' association, has promoted senior external affairs adviser Steve Coventry to head the government affairs unit. Separately, Rocky Lorusso has been recruited as external affairs adviser, joining from a comms executive role at the Civil Engineering Contractors' Association.
