The IPR has come up with a novel seminar to kick off a series of
eight events dealing with various PR issues. The institute is going to
show PR professionals how to network.
The seminar, to take place on 28 September at the Berners Hotel in
London, will deal with such difficult issues as: how to network, with
whom and when.
Now call me naive, but I would assume that anybody who is barely
half-way competent in his or her role in, bear in mind, public relations
should hardly need to be taught how to schmooze in the first place.
Not so, according to event organiser Caroline Harwood. ’If you worked in
local government PR and then went into consultancy, you would not have
had much chance to network.’
She also points out that the seminar is also for PR folk starting out in
their first job. But surely networking is a talent you learn by trial
and error and comes from your ability to communicate? Not necessarily
so. ’We try to show when and how to network,’ says Harwood.
And to be fair, although it would seem that networking is a prerequisite
for being successful in PR, the seminar is proving immensely
Last year’s event was a sell-out, and this year’s 150-seater seminar is
’It won’t be a series of patronising seminars,’ Harwood tells me.
’People will be able to meet and discuss issues and have drinks.’ Now,
that sounds more like networking.
