The move follows a review of the council's comms and performance departments, announced last November.
Isle of Wight Council chief executive Steve Beynon said: 'Despite the reduction in posts, the comms department will now assume responsibility for more areas, including more internet-based services and supporting the council's partnership arrangements as well as policy-related functions.'
The comms unit is being renamed the resident information and consultation department.
The council has made the cuts through compulsory and voluntary redundancies and early retirement. A total of £32m needs to shaved from the council's budget over the next four years.
