BRUSSELS: Expanding UK energy firm Eastern Group has selected

European Strategy as its first public affairs agency in continental

Europe.

The appointment comes after a competitive pitch against Citigate

Westminster and GPC. The agency will support Eastern’s European

expansion plans outside the UK, as electricity and gas markets on the

continent become increasingly deregulated.

The bulk of the work covers strategic advice, intelligence gathering and

profile-raising among EU institutions in Brussels. The brief will also

include government relations in eight key European countries.

European Strategy acting MD Matt Lambert will lead the account, liaising

with affiliates in markets outside Brussels. He will report to Eastern’s

public affairs head Rachael Reid, whose appointment two months ago

triggered the pitch.

The main political issue for Eastern on the continent is the European

Parliament’s electricity directive. This covers the deregulation of

electricity markets across the EU and is being implemented by national

governments.

Reid said: ’We recognise the central role that the European Commission

and Parliament play in the opening up of the electricity and gas markets

throughout the EU. We are keen to ensure that the institutions

understand our plans.’

European Strategy’s London-based sister agency, Westminster Strategy,

handles UK public affairs for Eastern’s parent company, Texas

Utilities.

Eastern’s UK public affairs agency is Citigate Westminster.

- Eastern has picked Grandfield to handle its UK financial and corporate

relations (PR Week, 6 August). Incumbent Citigate Dewe Rogerson

repitched alongside Fishburn Hedges and Hogarth.
