The company, which sponsors rugby team London Wasps, has made the appointment within weeks of hiring Unisys comms chief Stella Low as comms and PR director across the EMEA region.

GolinHarris was previously retained to handle UK comms only but will now see its remit massively expanded following a competitive pitch in late 2010. It becomes the first PR agency to handle EMEA-wide comms for EMC.

Cloud computing is an online method by which computers can connect on a virtual ‘cloud’ to share information and software.

GolinHarris has been briefed to promote EMC as a ‘thought leader’ in cloud computing and will deliver a series of campaigns to elevate the debate surrounding the method on to CEOs’ agendas.

EMC became the sponsor of London Wasps in late 2009 and the agency plans to exploit this relationship over the coming year.

Low, who joined the company shortly before Christmas, was previously marketing comms director at IT software manufacturer and consultancy Unisys. She appointed GolinHarris immediately after her arrival and the agency will run the account from its London office.

The win comes months after GolinHarris landed the UK PR account for EMC, following a competitive pitch process in June 2010.

Alexis Dalrymple, director of technology at GolinHarris, said: ‘Cloud computing is now a game-changing technology. Our goal is to create EMC stories that are interesting and relevant to the broader national and business press.’

EMC was last year reported to be worth $50 billion.
