ITV has appointed Derval Fitzsimons to replace Jim Buchanan as

editor of its home news content. Fitzsimons is currently editor of IRN,

the radio news business 20 per cent owned by ITN. She has been in the

role since June 1996.

In her new role, Fitzsimons will focus on the build up to the general

election. ’Consumer issues and health stories are also of broad

interest, and there is a growing thirst for show business and sports

news,’ she said.

Fitzsimons began her career on the Belfast Telegraph and worked for

Belfast’s leading commercial radio station, Downtown Radio, during the

height of the troubles. She joined ITN in 1990 and worked on ITV’s News

at Ten for a year. She was the youngest and first female editor at

IRN.

Her departure follows that of Stuart Thomas, IRN’s news editor, for

ITN-owned station LBC (PR Week, 26 May). Buchanan has moved within ITN,

which produces ITV’s news, to become head of ITN Core News, its

logistical centre.
