UNICEF UK has appointed Angela Travis as its new head of
Travis reports to and replaces Anita Tiessen, who was promoted in March
(PR Week, 31 March) to the role of deputy executive director,
programmes, at the organisation.
Tiessen, who was in the communications role for eighteen months, took
over her new role last week.
The communications team, for which Travis is responsible, is made up of
11 people, comprising three units: press and PR, parliamentary work and
information services. The head of communications controls an annual
budget of pounds 600,000.
Travis is charged with continuing to raise awareness of UNICEF and its
work, and attracting increased levels of support for its activities from
within the UK. Her main tasks will be to increase the organisation’s
media profile, to lead its campaigning work and to take it forward in
Over the coming months she will be focusing on the organisation’s
’Growing Up Alone’ campaign aimed at helping children who are alone
because of poverty, conflict and/or HIV/Aids, in addition to working on
UNICEF’s relaunched website.
Travis brings ten years’ experience in the international charity
communications field, having worked for Oxfam, Voluntary Service
Overseas and latterly as operations manager for Jubilee 2000.
