MEDIA: CRCA focuses on mayoral election

Capital FM, LBC, TalkSport and 15 other commercial radio stations

are joining forces to raise awareness of the London mayoral

election.

As members of the Commercial Radio Companies Association (CRCA), they

will run advertisements and develop programming in the run-up to May’s

election to spread understanding of the mayor’s role and encourage

people to vote.

The CRCA aims to show the effectiveness of local radio in discussing

local issues and as a campaign communication tool. The campaign runs

from 20 April to 4 May.

Sunrise Radio is planning to interview every Asian candidate in the

election for the London assembly. And Choice FM’s Schumann Shuffle show

is interviewing all the mayoral candidates in the run up to the

election, as well as campaigners such as Simon Woolley from Operation

Black Vote.

Seven pre-recorded commercials have been produced, paid for by the CRCA,

which will be aired for free by the participating radio stations.

CRCA chief executive Paul Brown said: ’Commercial radio has loyal

listeners that our competitors find difficult to reach, and considerable

expertise in communicating public service initiatives to them. The

London-wide campaign is just one example of what we can do. Our

experience with it will inform a nationwide campaign on voting leading

up to the next general election.’
