The Commission for Racial Equality has restructured its

communications department and appointed Robin Banerji to the

newly-created position of head of communications.

Banerji joins the advisory body from the Ministry of Defence, where he

was senior information officer in charge of the armed forces.

PR was previously the responsibility of Chris Myant, a senior press

officer who reported to the chairman.

Banerji will head a seven-strong team, including Myant, a

newly-appointed press officer and four staff working on publications.

There is a further vacancy on the publications team. Banerji reports to

director of policy and communications Phil Barnett.

’We’ve brought the media people together with publications,’ said

Barnett.

’Robin’s role will be to ensure they work together strategically.’

Banerji said that as well as overseeing media and internal

communications and publications, he would be developing CRE’s web site

and e-mail subscription list.

’The way the internet and e-mail is going, it is increasingly possible

to tap into a market with precision. Traditional media outlets, broad

spectrum coverage, and direct mail are slow and cumbersome. We are

looking to develop a much quicker and efficient alternative.’
