The south coast local authority will use social media Foursquare, a location-based social networking website, to boost use of 15 libraries across the city with a special event on Saturday.
Brighton & Hove will host a 'Foursquare day' when anyone checking in on the platform at any library on that day will be entered into a prize draw.
Council head of comms John Shewell said: 'Social media are enabling us to transform the relationship we have with our customers because we can be available to them 24/7 wherever they are.'
He added: 'Libraries are just the sort of service that can benefit from location-based technology, such as Foursquare, because a goal of that service is to tempt people through the front door.'
The council claims this is the first example of any public body in the UK using Foursquare to drive up footfall, promote parts of the business and engage with an elusive, tech-savvy audience.
Under the campaign, there will be ten annual audio visual subscription cards to be won.
