Public wants strike curbs as firefighters prepare for Bonfire Night walkout

Two out of three people are calling for government powers to curb striking public sector workers, suggesting unions have failed to win public hearts and minds.

An exclusive poll of 3,000 members of the public by PRWeek and OnePoll found that 69 per cent believed antistrike laws should be imposed on firefighters who are set to walk out in disputes over shift patterns on 5 November. Some 66 per cent also called for laws to curb strike action among other public sector workers.

Three out of five respondents said they did not support the London firefighters strike, despite sympathy for firefighters being four times higher than that for other workers embroiled in disputes.
