DIARY: Up the Amazon with a grand piano for the Wai Wai

Anna Nicholas, self-confessed ’pampered Mayfair PR girl’ is soon to embark upon her second expedition up the Amazon river.

Anna Nicholas, self-confessed ’pampered Mayfair PR girl’ is soon to

embark upon her second expedition up the Amazon river.

This time, as well as feasting on the delightful local cuisine (rodents

and piranhas, if you please), Nicholas will be taking a grand piano with

her.

Why? Well it all came about after a trip in May to the Wai Wai tribe,

which lives in deep jungle in Guyana. Nicholas was taking part in this

expedition - led by one Colonel Blashford-Snell, known as Blashers, to

his friends - organised to bring much-needed aid to the tribe.

On their departure, the village’s chief priest pleaded with them to

bring a grand piano for the village church and Blashers, who has been

described as eccentric on more than one occasion, agreed.

Nicholas has managed to find a grand piano from one of her clients:

Millennium and Copthorne Hotels. She is now, in a move beyond the

comprehension of those who know her, preparing for her next visit in

October.

’I do think I’m mad sometimes,’ she sighs. ’But once you’re there, you

become engrossed in the project. I really had a lump in my throat when I

left last time.’
