Top five UK bank and former building society Abbey National has

re-created its most senior media relations position three years after it

was dropped.

The role will be taken by Christina Mills, formerly media relations head

for NatWest’s retail and commercial business, who joins the bank next

month.

Mills becomes head of media relations for the Abbey National group - a

position last held by Chris Wermann who left three years ago.

She will report to corporate affairs director Thomas Coops, who was

promoted at the end of March after four years as the bank’s head of

investor relations (PR Week, 31 March). Coops has re-created the

position as part of an ongoing PR review.

Based in Abbey National’s London headquarters, Mills has a remit to lead

the bank’s 12-strong in-house media relations team, and to head media

relations for both the bank and its subsidiary brands, including on-line

service Cahoot, Scottish Mutual, finance company First National and

asset manager Cater Allen Holdings.

’We want Christina to reinforce our messages through the media and

concentrate on strategy,’ Coops said.

Mills left NatWest after three-and-a-half-years, taking voluntary

redundancy in February ahead of the Royal Bank of Scotland takeover.

Since her departure, Mills has been working on a freelance basis for

Barclays’ group media relations team and on the ABN Amro account at Ergo

Communications.
