DETROIT: The Ford Motor Company has appointed Jim Vella as director

for global news and information. He replaces John Spelich, who left Ford

in July to become director of worldwide corporate communications at

Gateway (PR Week, 9 July).

Vella will report to Mel Stephens, director of corporate

communications.

He will oversee a broad range of communications assignments in the

legal, financial and human resources areas, as well as general media

inquiries and crisis communications.

Vella joined Ford 11 years ago. Prior to his appointment, he served as

director of manufacturing and regional news.

Meanwhile, Ford has decided not to replace former director of public

affairs for automotive operations, Judith Muhlberg who left in

February.

Instead, her responsibilities have been divided among existing staff.
