Amazon seeks PR chief to steer UK expansion plans

On-line bookseller Amazon, which has recently lost both its MD and

marketing director, is seeking its first UK PR director as part of an

expansion programme.

Amazon.co.uk launched last October, and in the first quarter of this

year it generated an estimated pounds 8 million worth of sales. However,

September is proving a difficult month for the UK arm of Amazon.com.

Last week, Amazon’s managing director Simon Murdoch left less than a

year after its launch. The bookseller is also facing increasing pressure

from BOL, the Bertelsmann-backed internet bookshop which has appointed

Powerhouse on fees close to pounds 300,000 (PR Week, 3 September).

The new PR and public affairs head will liaise with Amazon’s two UK

agencies Joe Public Relations, which has a consumer brief, and

August. One, which covers public affairs, as well as managing its

in-house team.

The PR director will report to the marketing director at Amazon. co.uk,

a position which is also vacant following the departure of Chris

Ketley.

PR manager Judith Catton is currently responsible for overseeing PR.

She said: ’The person appointed will be responsible for defining and

developing the overall PR strategy for the UK. We are seeking someone

with a lot of experience of both PR and public affairs.’

’We are not looking to follow the pattern set by Amazon in the US but to

establish and develop a strategy for the UK,’ said Catton.
