MILAN. Carl Byoir and Associates, the brand recently revived by

Hill and Knowlton, has re-entered the Italian market by acquiring

generalist agency Societa Piani di Communicazione (SPC).

SPC, whose clients include Philips’ consumer electronics and lighting

businesses, money transfer firm Western Union and Dutch chemicals group

DSM, was ranked 25th in PR Week’s 1999 league table of Italian

agencies.

The consultancy employs 12 people and had a fee income of pounds 521,000

last year. Until the acquisition, SPC was affiliated to the Charles

Barker BSMG network.

SPC president and CEO Mariangela Moneta has been made president of Carl

Byoir, while SPC board director Daniela Colombo is vice-president.

Andrea Barbieri, a consultant at Hill and Knowlton who previously acted

as Carl Byoir’s representative in Italy, is general manager.

While Carl Byoir is developed as a hi-tech brand in the UK and other

countries, SPC will continue to run a full-service agency while

developing its technology division.

The re-launched Carl Byoir network has offices in the US, the UK and

across the Asia-Pacific region, and is planning to expand across

Europe.

The UK office was reopened this year, and is headed by Peter Thomas,

previously a director of H&K’s hi-tech division.
