Flack: (saving) on expenses - The Bowler, London, SW17

Reviewer: James Gilheany, consultant, Fishburn Hedges

- What is it good for?

This smart new venue boasts a great range of hearty dishes and drinks. Located next to Wandsworth Common overground station, it is split into two areas - one for drinking and one for dining - and is a favourite with commuters looking to wind down on their way home. Although the dining area is for a full sit-down dinner, you can get more traditional pub food in the drinking area.

- Signature dishes

The pork belly is a favourite, as it comes with some of London's best black pudding. However, the real treat is on the dessert menu, which features the Bowling Room fondant.

- Who's the boss?

The Bowler is the latest project undertaken by Alexander Kersjes, who also set up event venue company Altitude London. Meals are prepared fresh on the premises by Paul Ribbands.

- Tips please?

Book for a seat looking out on to the Common.

- What's the damage?

Starters average out at about £7, while main courses range from £12.50 to £17.50.
