Opinion: From our Readers - Industry should not exploit young people

It is a pity that Tom Davies felt it was necessary to work nine hours a day for no salary to get a foot in the PR career door (Letters, 10 September).

It is an even greater shame that there are still elements in the industry who can exploit someone in this way.

Such a culture might provide a 'realistic' introduction to working, but young people are entitled to certain rights under employment legislation and the legal minimum wage is among them.

It is ironic that in the same issue of the magazine, the 25th anniversary supplement of PRWeek cited Lord Chadlington as someone who was fighting a quarter of a century ago to bring professionalism to the sector. How far have we come?
