- What is it good for?

Aylesford - England's oldest village on the outskirts of Maidstone - is home to a first-rate modern French establishment. The £65 tasting menu will probably get you fired, but with excellent pre fixe options and a cosy intimacy, Hengist is perfect for pitching to journos and entertaining low-budget clients.

- Signature dish

The menu changes with the seasons and is strong on regional produce. Head chef Daniel Hatton recently gave a demo of Roast Lion of 'Roundwood Orchard' Pork with Pearl Barley, Poached Onions and Calvados Cream Jus, at the farmers' market to promote local growers.

- Who's the boss?

It is co-owned by TV chef Richard Phillips, who also owns Thackeray's.

A discretionary service charge of 12 per cent is added to the bill.

- What's the damage?

The du jour lunch costs £12.95 for two courses or £14.95 for three. The evening three-course Market Menu is £19.95
