We are not surprised to see the number of financial journalists migrating to the consultancy world.

A few years in a good consultancy provides excellent training and enables us as headhunters to judge whether they have acquired the broader skills needed to be top-class communicators in a corporate environment.

Many of our corporate clients share our view that hiring a journalist straight into a corporate role can be risky - they tend to be lone animals and can underestimate the challenge of having to sell their ideas to the media and/or senior management.

No longer does their phone ring constantly - except in a crisis situation, of course.
