Opinion: From our Readers - Unpaid internships are bad for industry

At Smith & Smith PR we pay all our interns. If someone works, they should be paid for their labour (Interns: Opportunity or Exploitation? p20).

Unpaid internships are unethical and have a negative impact on diversity in the industry; if internships are a serious 'way in' to PR, then unpaid internships create a white, middle-class sector where other youngsters starting out won't have the same opportunities.

It is more important than ever for our industry to give our professionals of the future the support they deserve.

The competitive job market shouldn't be used as an excuse to exploit job seekers.
