Designer clothes label Paul Smith has appointed Pia Tonna to be its
first head of international press and marketing.
Tonna, who was formerly UK head of press, will oversee press offices in
Paris, Milan, New York and Japan. She will also be responsible for
advertising and marketing internationally. Previously, each
international office reported to the eponymous designer directly. The
move to have them all reporting to Tonna is designed to free up Smith’s
time so that he can get on with the business of designing.
In addition to Tonna’s appointment, Smith has expanded the PR team
looking after its menswear. Debbie Waite joins as junior press officer
to assist press officer Stacey Duguid and head of men’s press Russell
The appointment follows the recent launch of the Paul Smith Shoes
collection, which are made under licence by Overland. Waite will work
mainly on footwear.
Romany Hogg has been appointed women’s press officer to replace Marvia
Roach, who left five weeks ago to go travelling.
Smith, which is the most successful British designer label in Japan, is
expanding in the UK. Last month saw the opening of a franchise in Leeds
and another launch in York in September.
