Cable and Wireless, the UK’s second-largest telecoms company, has

hired former Barclays PR chief Susan Cottam to head its global corporate

PR as it refocuses its business.

In her new role, Cottam will have responsibility for all aspects of

external PR in the UK. She will head a team of nine and will be

responsible for co-ordinating PR, corporate events, sponsorship and

community investment across the company’s 50 global subsidiaries.

Cottam has joined the company as it embarks on a strategic u-turn after

the sale of its UK cable TV business Cable and Wireless Communications

to former rival NTL, in order to concentrate on business customers. C&W

plans to focus on delivering telecoms, data transfer and the internet to

businesses.

In its last financial year, ending 31 March 1999, global turnover was

pounds 7.94 billion. Three-quarters of this was attributed to services

to business customers.

The company also recently announced plans to sell off its 50 per cent

share in loss-making mobile phone network One2One to Deutsche Telekom

for pounds 8.4 billion.

Cottam said: ’It is a very interesting time to be joining the company as

it repositions itself in a fast moving and exciting market. My objective

is to ensure that our global strategy is cohesive.’

Cottam reports to chief executive Graham Wallace. She replaces Adrian

Moorey, who left in March this year to become corporate communications

director at the Civil Aviation Authority.

Prior to joining the company Cottam had spent eight years at Barclays

where she headed the corporate PR department. She was one of Barclays’

top 300 executives and reported to Elizabeth Wade, group communications

director. She left in September last year just before it emerged that PR

operations were to undergo a radical restructure leading to job losses

among PROs.
