The Law Society's PR chief Melissa Davis has left after five years in the top role to set up her own agency.

Departure: Melissa Davis
Davis, who was head of media and PR at the Law Society, has launched MD Communications, which specialises in the legal sector.

She has already won contracts clients including Legal Ombudsman, Peters & Peters and QEB Hollis Whiteman.

Davis has signed up PA consultants, web designers, media trainers, business trainers and research companies to take on the briefs, helping to provide PR and profile raising.

‘Over my time at the Law Society dealing directly with the members I realised there was a large hole to fill with regard to PR services for the sector and I hope that very soon I’ll be able to fill that gap, said Davis. ‘Lawyers haven’t always received the best PR and I hope to be able to turn around the super-tanker.’

Meanwhile, the Law Society has appointed Gemma Buxton to take over Davis’ role. Buxton joins after a period freelancing with the Department of Health and Defra.

She previously worked as a media adviser for Northern Territory Government, Australia.

At the Law Society she will lead a team of 4. She joins the Law Society at a busy time as the organisation prepares for legal action against the Legal Services Commission.
