Flack: (saving) on expenses - The Dogs, Edinburgh, EH2

Reviewer: Sarah Lee, director, Hot Tin Roof PR

- What is it good for?

The clatter of vintage crockery, light flooding through Georgian sash windows, the echoing din of a dozen conversations bouncing off floorboards and rickety bentwood chairs make this a perfect venue for business or pleasure.

- Signature dishes

With honest food, beautifully cooked, The Dogs serves traditional dishes from your childhood in a quiet and understated style. Sardines on toast; pork pie and poached egg followed by Bakewell pudding with jam and custard - yum.

- Who's the boss?

Dave Ramsden, formerly of the Michelin-starred Fitzhenry's and Rogue restaurants in Edinburgh.

- Tips please?

It's never quiet, so always book in advance, even for lunch.

- What's the damage?

To keep prices down, Ramsden has cut the frills without losing quality of food or service.

You get exceptional food and sensible portions at very low prices. Expect to pay about £10 for two courses at lunchtime.

The Dogs, 110 Hanover Street, Edinburgh, EH2 1DR. 0131 220 1208.
