Former group director of communications for United Utilities, John

Drummond, is to found a corporate responsibility venture.

The as-yet-unnamed business will operate as part of Corporate Culture,

the Liverpool-based company that advises organisations on corporate

communications.

Drummond, who finished at United Utilities last month, has extensive

experience in the area of corporate responsibility; from environmental

impact, health and safety, to community relations.

He helped United Utilities to win the Impact on Society award at this

year’s Business in the Community Impact Awards. The award goes to the

organisation that is judged best at managing its impact on every level

of society.

Many see the social responsibility area as having huge potential for the

PR industry. Drummond cited examples: the new pension act, which

requires trustees to outline policies on socially responsible

investment, and the recent appointment of a minister of corporate social

responsibility.

He said: ’Every business has an impact on society. The choice is to

manage it or not to manage it and why would anyone choose not to manage

it?’

No clients or staff have yet been announced, but Drummond has high hopes

for the venture. ’I want to create the Wolff Olins of the sector,’ he

said. ’What it did for branding, I want to do for corporate

responsibility.’

Drummond is also on a six-month part-time secondment to the DTI’s

competitiveness unit, looking at corporate responsibility.

- United Utilities group public affairs manager Alan Price is acting as

group director of communications while a replacement for Drummond is

sought.
