Opinion: From our Readers - Free up public sector procurement ..

In response to the cutting of Government PR expenditure through the Central Office of Information during 2009/10 (News, 30 July), estimates by us at Alexor suggest that at least 25 per cent of the £41m combined total Government spend for PR and news could have been saved if the COI opened up its rosters to more competition, more frequently, and public sector bodies were freed up from restrictive tendering procedures.

A lot of the time, the COI is only engaged to circumvent procurement rules - but a public sector body has to pay it a hefty fee in order to do this. The whole thing is a touch Kafka-esque.

The sooner public sector procurement is freed up, the better off we will all be.
