Edward Bickham, the outgoing deputy chairman of Hill and Knowlton

UK, is to start work next month at global mining giant Anglo-American

plc.

The company, formed last May through the merger of the Anglo-American

Corporation of South Africa and its rival Minorco, has a market worth of

over pounds 12 billion and sits in the FTSE 100’s top 30.

Bickham’s role is understood to focus on government relations, according

to a company source. It is thought to be a newly-created post designed

to give the company a greater ’degree of represent-ation’ to

decision-makers following the merger.

Anglo-American’s PR is carried out largely in-house, through media

relations head Misha Nagelmackers and senior vice-president for investor

relations Nick von Schirnding.

Bickham was unavailable for comment but it is understood he will come in

below board level, reporting to finance director Anthony Lea, who has

overall responsibility for external affairs.

MD of H&K’s public affairs and corporate policy practice, Bickham had

been at the agency for seven years. He announced he would stand down two

weeks ago (PR Week, 25 February).
